As with most things in life, preparation is key. If you’re investing time and money in a portrait session (whether for yourself or your business), it’s worth taking a little extra time to prepare for it. Not only will doing this mean you’ll get the most out of your session, but it will reduce any anxiety or pre-shoot nerves that you may have, and mean that you can relax and look forward to the experience of being professionally photographed.

Engagement Session: Ellie & James
To follow on from my last blog on how I pose couples, I thought I’d show you some more couples portraits, while I share Ellie and James’s experience of being photographed by me.
Ellie booked a session with me last summer, following a portrait giveaway on my social media. I was very generous, and Ellie was one of three lucky people, who I offered a portrait session to in the Ashdown Forest.
After I told Ellie that she had won a portrait session with me, I asked her what kind of session she wanted. She replied that she would love to have a couples session with her fiancé. We chose a date in July and arranged a Zoom call, so we could have a chat and discuss the details of the session (I also gave her advice on what to wear and tips for how to get ready).

When it comes to posing couples, the first thing I do before taking ANY photographs, is to run through some simple posing guidelines, and teach my couple some foundation poses based on five feet positions. The idea of this being, that once you know some basic posing techniques, you will relax and feel more confident during your portrait session.
Like the couple featured in this blog, most of us have only ever posed for awkward school photos and so we worry that we wont be any good at posing for professional photographs. Let me reassure you that with a little guidance anyone can learn to pose for photographs, and the great thing is that once you know how to pose, you can take what you have learned and apply it again in different situations (like when you have to pose for photos at a friends party).
